Confidence can change as we get older.

You may have once felt certain about who you were and where you were going. Then life happened.

Relationships changed. Careers changed. Your body changed. Your responsibilities changed. Perhaps you experienced disappointment, loss or years of putting everyone else before yourself.

And somewhere along the way, your confidence became quieter.

But confidence isn't something you lose forever.

You can rebuild it.

Stop Waiting to Feel Confident

Many people believe they need confidence before they can take action.

The truth is often the opposite.

You take the step first — and confidence grows because you proved to yourself that you could do it.

Start small.

Make the phone call. Apply for the opportunity. Speak up in the conversation. Try something new.

Every time you do something that scares you, you teach yourself:

"I can handle more than I thought."

Stop Comparing Yourself to Your Younger Self

Your body, priorities and circumstances may be different now.

That's okay.

You don't need to become the woman you were at 25.

You need to become comfortable with the woman you are today.

Your experiences have given you something your younger self didn't have: wisdom.

You've survived difficult seasons. You've learned from mistakes. You've loved, lost, adapted and continued.

That is strength.

Pay Attention to How You Speak to Yourself

Listen to your inner dialogue.

Would you speak to your best friend the way you sometimes speak to yourself? Probably not.

Instead of: "I'm too old," try: "I'm experienced enough to know what matters to me."

Instead of: "I can't do this," try: "I can learn how to do this."

Instead of: "It's too late," try: "I can still begin."

Your words influence the way you see yourself.

Keep Promises to Yourself

One of the simplest ways to rebuild confidence is to start trusting yourself again.

Make small promises — and keep them.

If you say you'll go for a 20-minute walk, go. If you say you'll spend an hour working on your goal, do it. If you decide you're going to stop answering messages late at night, honour that boundary.

Every promise you keep tells your mind:

"I can rely on myself."

That creates confidence from the inside out.

Take Care of Your Appearance — For You

Taking care of yourself isn't about looking younger.

It's about feeling good in your own skin.

Wear clothes that make you feel comfortable and confident. Take care of your hair. Put on the lipstick you've been saving. Move your body. Get enough rest.

Do the little things that make you feel like yourself.

Not for anyone else's approval. For you.

Spend Time Around People Who Lift You Up

Your environment can influence your confidence.

Pay attention to how you feel after spending time with certain people.

Do you feel encouraged? Seen? Inspired? Or do you constantly feel criticized, compared or diminished?

You don't have to cut everyone out of your life.

But you can become more intentional about who gets access to your time and energy.

Celebrate Yourself

Don't wait for someone else to recognize your achievements.

Recognize them yourself.

Write down three things you've accomplished. They don't have to be extraordinary.

Maybe you raised a family. Built a career. Started again after a difficult season. Walked away from something unhealthy. Learned something new. Kept going when life was difficult.

These things count.

You count.

Give Yourself Permission to Be Seen

Sometimes confidence means allowing yourself to take up space.

Share your opinion. Wear the outfit. Start the business. Post the picture. Apply for the position. Say what you really think.

You don't have to be perfect to be visible.

You simply have to be willing to let yourself be seen.

Your Confidence Can Come Back

You don't need to become a completely different person.

You simply need to start believing in yourself again — one small action at a time.

Your 40s aren't proof that your opportunities are disappearing.

They can be the years when you finally stop asking: "Am I good enough?"

And start asking: "What would I do if I believed I was?"

That's where your next chapter can begin.

Your Confidence Challenge

For the next seven days, do one thing each day that makes you feel proud of yourself.

It can be something tiny.

  • Keep a promise to yourself
  • Say no when you mean no
  • Try something new
  • Speak up
  • Take yourself somewhere
  • Write down something you're proud of

At the end of seven days, look back and notice how you feel.

Confidence grows when you show yourself that you can trust yourself.
