Somewhere between becoming who everyone needed you to be and managing everything life asked of you, you may have lost touch with yourself.

Not completely. She's still there. But perhaps she's quieter than she used to be.

You might find yourself asking:

  • What do I actually enjoy anymore?
  • What do I want?
  • Who am I outside of my responsibilities?
  • What happened to the woman I used to be?

If any of these questions sound familiar, you're not alone. And here's something important:

You don't necessarily need to find your old self. You may be ready to discover your next self.

Stop Trying to Become Who You Used to Be

It's natural to look back at your younger years and think about the woman you were. Maybe you were more adventurous. Maybe you had bigger dreams. Maybe you felt more confident or spontaneous.

But you have changed. You've experienced things your younger self couldn't have imagined. You've learned. You've survived difficult seasons. You've grown.

So instead of asking, “How do I become the woman I used to be?” try asking:

Who am I becoming now?

That's a much more powerful question.

Make Time for Yourself Without Feeling Guilty

Many women become so accustomed to caring for other people that doing something purely for themselves can feel selfish. It isn't.

Time alone can help you hear your own thoughts again. Start small.

  • Take a walk
  • Read a book
  • Sit quietly with a cup of tea
  • Go somewhere you've never been
  • Write in a journal
  • Turn your phone off for 30 minutes

You don't need an entire day at a spa to reconnect with yourself. Sometimes 30 uninterrupted minutes can be enough to begin.

Revisit the Things That Once Interested You

Think back to the things you enjoyed before life became so busy.

  • Was there something you loved doing?
  • Something you wanted to learn?
  • Somewhere you wanted to go?
  • A creative hobby you abandoned?
  • A subject you were fascinated by?

You don't have to return to everything from your past. But revisit the list. You may discover that some of those interests still belong in your life. And some may no longer fit. Both answers are useful.

Pay Attention to What Gives You Energy

Your energy can tell you a lot about what matters to you.

  • After spending time with someone, do you feel encouraged or drained?
  • After doing something, do you feel energised or depleted?
  • When you're talking about certain subjects, do you become more animated?

Start noticing these patterns. You don't need to analyse every feeling. Simply become curious.

What makes me feel more alive?

Then find ways to make more room for those things.

Get Honest About What No Longer Fits

Rediscovering yourself isn't only about discovering new things. It's also about recognising what you've outgrown.

Maybe it's a relationship dynamic. A role you've always played. A belief about yourself. A career path. A habit. An expectation. A version of success that belonged to someone else.

You are allowed to say: “This worked for me once, but it doesn't work for me anymore.”

That isn't failure. That's growth.

Start Saying What You Actually Want

For many women, this can be surprisingly difficult. We're often very good at knowing what everyone else wants. But when someone asks, “What do YOU want?” there can be silence.

Start practising. What do you want for:

  • Your mornings?
  • Your weekends?
  • Your friendships?
  • Your work?
  • Your home?
  • Your finances?
  • Your relationships?
  • Your health and wellbeing?
  • Your future?

You don't have to know all the answers. Start with one: what do I want more of right now?

Give Yourself Permission to Change

Perhaps the biggest part of rediscovering yourself is accepting that you're allowed to change.

You don't need everyone's approval. You don't need to justify every decision. You don't have to remain the same person simply because people have become comfortable with that version of you.

Your 40s, 50s and beyond can be a time of refinement rather than reinvention. You know more now. You understand yourself better. You've experienced enough to recognise what matters.

That knowledge is valuable. Use it.

You Haven't Lost Yourself

Maybe you've simply been busy being everything to everyone else. Maybe you've spent years surviving. Maybe you've changed and haven't taken the time to get acquainted with the woman you're becoming.

Whatever the reason, you don't have to rush. Start with curiosity. Ask yourself better questions. Try something new. Let go of something that no longer fits. Create some space. And listen.

You may discover that you haven't lost yourself at all. She's been waiting for you to slow down long enough to hear her.

You don't need to have your whole future figured out. Start by understanding where you are today.
